Coach Patton was born in San Francisco but grew up in San Mateo. He is a product of the San Mateo school system and graduated from Aragon High School in 1990. At Aragon, Coach Patton was a key player on the varsity basketball team from 1988-1990. This team was the CCS runner-up in 1989 and won the CCS championship in 1990 but ultimately lost in the Nor Cal semi-finals both years. They led the state of California in scoring at 98.3 points per game and went on to compile a 55-10 record during his varsity career. His 1988-1990 varsity team was the first team of any sport to be inducted in the school’s Hall of Fame.
Coach Patton went on to play and start one year at point guard at Canada College in Redwood City in 1994. He graduated from the College of San Mateo in 1994 with an Associate of Arts degree in Liberal Studies. He transferred and furthered his education at the University of California at Davis where he graduated with his Bachelors of Arts degree in Sociology with an emphasis in Law and Society.
Post-graduation in 1996, Coach Patton went on to work at The Martin Luther King Community Center in San Mateo from 1997-2004 where he was a Recreation Specialist III. During his experience in serving his community is where Coach Patton’s commitment and passion for coaching and developing youth started at the San Mateo Twilight League, a league to educate and keep at-risk youth off the streets in the community.
Coach Patton landed his dream job at Aragon High School in 1999 as a Campus Safety Specialist. A few years later he would go on to assist with the school’s basketball program as an assistant coach to the living Legendary Coach Lou Murgo.
He made his head coaching debut when the freshman program was reinstated in 2008 at Aragon. Matriculating through the years to Junior Varsity and now the Head Varsity Coach since 2016. He’s led his team to the CCS quarter finals in 2016 and followed up with a CCS finals run in 2017 ultimately losing in the championship.
Wanting a solid stage for players to improve their individual basketball skill set within the structure of team play and to be winners on and off the court in the San Mateo area, Coach Patton reestablished San Mateo Fast Break, an AAU team where he got his first chance to play AAU basketball and reap the benefits and rewards through this awesome sport in 1985.
